Executive Director


The Loudoun Literacy Council is a private, community-based nonprofit dedicated to improving illiteracy throughout Loudoun County, Virginia. We help adults and children from disadvantaged families learn to speak, read, write, and understand English. For adults, our trained volunteers provide year-round, convenient lessons in either basic reading or ELL. For children, we provide literacy enrichment programs for those who live at or below the poverty line and for those who reside in our local homeless shelters.

The Executive Director, reporting to the Board of Directors, serves as a chief administrative and executive officer of the organization, overseeing all day-to-day operations.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Manage day-to-day operation of the organization.
  • Manage organizational staff, including staff development, recruitment, and salaries.
  • Working closely with media to highlight the organization.
  • Work with the Board of Directors on organizational priorities, goals, and vision.
  • Provide regular progress reports to the board of directors.
  • Recruit, manage, and support volunteers.
  • Create and establish marketing and communication efforts.
  • Supervise, motivate, and manage staff.
  • Act as spokesperson and source of information for the media; and
  • Other duties and projects as needed.

Financial Management Tasks:

  • Develop and manage an annual budget in consultation with the Treasurer of the Board of Directors.
  • Provide financial oversight and management of the organization, including compliance with audit requirements.
  • Maintain financial records, including all necessary state and federal government reports and tax payments; and
  • Prepare and interpret financial reports for the Board of Directors.

Development/Fund Raising:

  • Create and implement fundraising ideas.
  • Create and maintain partnerships with other agencies and organizations.
  • Make use of all available resources and opportunities to come up with partnerships and find the best possible way to raise awareness and funds to increase literacy in Loudoun County.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships with major donors.
  • Strengthen existing events or plan new fundraising events; and
  • Drafting of grant proposals and grant reports as required.


  • Proven fundraising and development experience.
  • Volunteer leadership experience.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in educational organizations or literacy councils.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented, strong organizational skills, and self-motivated; and
  • Capacity for, and comfort with, teamwork
